About French languages varieties

How many French language styles do exist ? As many as there are social classes, regional dialects, community influences and distinctive lands over the world speaking french.

Lets start with the three different language registers : formal, informal and neutral French. Each of those contain words, expressions and sentence building of their own. The best is to start with neutral French. But what if you want to communicate freely with a Frenchman, that is to mean be able to understand them : do you think your french colleagues, family members, friends or neighbours always speak neutral French ? If you want to read books, you will need to master some written expressions or verbal tenses.

Then appear regional accents : someone from the North of France has a totally different accent than a South man from Marseille, from the Pyrenees, or from a Breton, Parisian or Frenchman living near the German border. Not to mention special words or expressions. What about Moroccan, African or Canadian French communities, would they speak differently ? Sure : accent, vocabulary and even sentence building are divergent. Finally, let’s not forget literature that even uses a past tense that totally disappeared from spoken language.

With Céline, you can learn to differentiate all these subtleties, using different media platforms and video excerpts, in order to familiarise with all these varieties in the French language. To your screens, and let’s go!

Natural learning

“Every living organism is fulfilled when it follows the right path for its own nature.”

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

As a language teacher having experienced the difficulties of learning a foreign language abroad for 13 years, I am now convinced that the best method to learn efficiently is natural learning.

Natural learning implies following your own style, according to your experience and nature and by following your personal timeline. That means it is important to acknowledge yourself and your learning style in order to be able learn naturally.

Throughout my own development and carrier, I discovered that the best tools for efficient learning are curiosity and joy. What if you could develop a passion for learning ? In the competitive world we live in, the social abilities required in the ‘rat race’ can be quite oppressive, leaving us few occasions to really be ourselves and connect to our emotions. But good news, competitivity and realization can be associated with personal fulfilment and enjoyment, if your find the right teacher.

Like parents for children, teachers are the mentors of their students. They need to be motivational, basing their relationship on trust and belief, in order to help learners developing confidence and self assertiveness. These elements will allow them benevolent self-criticism, and allow them to expand positively at a personal and professional level.
